Fail: F

  • superficial, inadequate coverage of topic and key concepts,
  • inaccurate or misleading grasp of concepts and issues;
  • little attempt to integrate or evaluate ideas;
  • over-reliance on ideas of others, plagiarism or other forms of cheating;
  • incoherent expression;
  • disorganised or poor presentation, and inadequate documentation;
  • incomplete documentation or ‘token’ submission of material.

Pass: D, C-, C, C+

  • adequate coverage and ability to communicate a basic understanding of major issues and concepts;
  • general familiarity with set readings and the topic;
  • some attempts to integrate, apply and evaluate the material;
  • adequate range of ideas and/or sources;
  • issues and implications not explored in any real depth;
  • adequate expression with a reasonable attempt to critique the views of others;
  • generally adequate presentation and documentation and some attempts to be consistent in content, style and format.

Credit: B-, B, B+

  • comprehensive coverage of the main implications of key concepts and relevant issues;
  • demonstrated understanding of the implications of these key concepts and relevant issues;
  • comfortable familiarity with the set readings and their contents;
  • thoughtful reflection upon the topic and its application to and relevance for professional practice;
  • recognition of the key issues and their inter relatedness, together with an adequate evaluation;
  • appropriate documentation and presentation which shows an awareness of generic conventions and the reading audience.

Distinction: A-, A

  • extra depth and breadth of reading, reflecting a superior coverage of the issues and demonstrating a greater understanding of the key and related concepts;
  • critical insight into the inter-relatedness of theory and practice;
  • thoughtful use of analogies and models, including reference to personal evidence/ experience to explain the basic concepts;
  • selective and critical use of a balanced range of relevant sources or materials;
  • imaginative or innovative approach;
  • concise, clear, purposeful written expression showing a mature sense of personal style with a strong command of generic conventions and an appreciation of the reading audience;
  • excellent documentation and presentation according to the house rules of the institution.

High Distinction: A+

As for distinction plus:

  • evidence of research using consistently high levels of:
    • distinctive and creative contributions including new ideas;
    • thought provoking suggestions and premises;
    • innovative applications; and
    • lateral thinking,
  • applied to thinking, analysis, communication and presentation of the answer.
